End Of Microsoft Windows OS as We Know It?

technology No Comments »

I just read this story of a Microsoft project code named Midori, which could replace the need for having an operating system in your PC.

According to the story, the Midori project would eliminate the need for having an OS running on your local personal computer. The idea is to take advantage of the power of the internet and the vast amount of applications that have sprang up. Applications would be running in a virtual container of sorts there by eliminating the need to have them exist on your physical computer. This allows the “run anywhere” model that was Java.

In this new Web 2.0 world, this approach makes sense. There are now multitude of internet applications that are in use by common internet users, most of whom have very little to no computer knowledge. They can use these applications without the need to worry about which OS these applications are running in the background; it doesn’t matter if it is Window, Mac, or Linux (Unix). All the user really cares about is that the application does its job.

That said, I don’t know about having a virtual OS though. I can certainly like that fact that one day I woke up and see the day where the memory hogs like Windows OS and Windows Applications are a thing of the past. Did you remember 20 years ago (around 1986), Windows ran in a PC that has only 256-512k of memory? That’s kilobytes of memory - not mega bytes or gigabtyes that we need today just to run Windows and applications.

There would not be a need to buy more powerful CPUs and huge memory modules. No more upgrades; or less of a need to. That would be nice.

But with the internet still in infancy, it is be immature to suggest that there will always an internet connection available. If this virtual OS is like the network boot, where the OS is found inside a private network, someone has to host these virtual OS. It will become an hosting issue as there will be billions of PCs trying to connect to a few data centers that host these operating systems.

Yes, the companies who provide these types of virtual operating systems will make millions. They will charge a subscription fee for using their service. Then again, think of how much infrastructure they have to have in place in order to serve the need. It is overwhelming.

So I think it would rather makes sense to think of your personal computer as a virtual terminal, the type that were in use since the days of Unix. These are still in wide spread use in colleges and universities. All it is needed is a terminal  where users could login and then start to run applications that run on mainframes or super computers that have the power to serve multiple users.

Anyway, go checkout the full story here: Midori project.

The Jing Project Free Camtasia tool

tools No Comments »

Are you looking for a free tool to create Camtasia videos? SWF? Image capture?

Well, you are in luck. There is a free tool called, The Jing Project, available that does just that. It’s created by the same people who created the Camtasia tool - which is Techsmith.

With this tool, you can create SWF file, which is a Flash format and capturing images. Most of the time, these SWF types of files are embedded inside an html page. It is streaming video meant for the web.

Also, as part of The Jing Project, you are getting a free 2Gb storage in screencast.com. What could be better than that?

Check their FAQ for more information.

There’s also the Camtasia version 3.0, which was free. Techsmith offerred it free last year for a limited time. I don’t think you can get it free anymore as you would have to request an activation key from Techsmith. But I could be wrong.

I have a copy of both tools. I have done screen captures with Camtasia 3 and like it. You can essentially use both tools to do screen capture or just capture the audio stream that is being played on your PC.

Actually, there is another free alternative, called CamStudio. I have not used it at all even though I do have a copy. I heard that there were issues when the SWF is played in FireFox browser. I have also heard that there is a fix for FireFox.

But with Jing, I don’t think you even need to consider CamStudio.

Everybody in the internet marketing world is adding video to their offerings. And video sharing sites such as YouTube attact millions of visitors. Think traffic, think conversion… There are possibilities.

The Jing Project is a good alternative - it’s FREE! Go grab a copy…

Had a blast at the Masters Seminar in Chicago

Events No Comments »

After 3 days in Chicago, I am glad I’m home. I had to rush off before the end of Sunday’s final presenter, Gina Greves-the JV Queen, at 4:20pm to get to the airport for a 7PM flight. Of course, the flight was delayed due to weather back home in Boston for half an hour. Nothing in life is ever perfect… Finally boarded the plane and left before 8PM. The plane arrived in Boston at 11PM and then didn’t get to the tarmac until 11:29! I hate delays…

The bright notes of the weekend are two folds. First, the speaker lineups for this event, The Master’s Seminar, was just amazing! You have some of the old timers and some of the newer and up-coming marketers. The seminar included such names as Alan Bechtold, Joel Comm, Ken McArthur, Frank Sousa, Willie Crawford, Donna Fox, Tracy Repchuk, The JV Queen, Kevin Nations, Anik Singal and many others.

Then the newer presenters, most of whom were speakers for the first time, included Erik Stafford, Eric Farewell, Simon Leung, and Bobtheteacher (Bob Jenkins). I believe Eric Farewell is the youngest of all the speakers. Alan Bechtold and Joel Comm gave two of the most powerful presention of the seminar.

Also, I was impressed by Tracy Repchuk as she rose from relatively unknown to be on rank with the top internet marketers. She gave me couple of very helpful advices.

The amount of tweets these presenters were doing must be one of the reasons why twitter is overwhelmed these last couple of days, including today! My twitter acount is http://twitter.com/jeffreyyung, by the way.

On the first night, there was a bonus event on Friday. It was a session, taped, between Joel Comm(the AdSense God) and Simon Leung(the Google Adwords guru, who’s the Google ex-employee who helped developed the Adwords program). They have an interactive session included fielding questions from the attendees. It’s informative.

The second bright note of this seminar was that it was mean to be a networking event from the start. Yes, the speakers’ main purpose was to get buyers and help out the host, Ross Golgberg, but everybody was there for the networking and JV aspect of this event. Not only did we get the chance to network between each speakers, between lunch and dinner, but there was a networking night on Saturday dedicated just for this purpose. And all of the speakers were available to answer any questions and also at the networking event. I think all events should have this…

I took plenty of notes. Of course, you have to do something with what you’ve learned in these types of events. If you don’t put these knowledge into actionable plans, nothing would result. Basically, all the knowledge in the world would be nil if you don’t use them. So, I plan to refocus my blog and also plan to take advantage of my BlogTalkRadio account (at http://blogtalkradio.com/jeffreyyung) to deliver my message.

Stay tuned…

AffSphere Affiliate Friendly Article Directory

Promotions No Comments »

I just found this site through Anik Singal, who is the owner. Anik has a populate site called Affiliate Classroom.

Even though AffSphere is currently in Beta stage, it has a lot of potential. If you have attempted Internet Marketing, you would have been told that submitting articles to article directories is the oldest and still the preferred route by most internet marketers. Gurus like Tim Gorman and Willie Crawford still swore by this. Not only are you getting back links, you are building your brand and your name in the process. It’s free, although you pay with your time…

You should know that there’s a down side to article submission to article directories: namely that affiliate links are frowned upon! You submission will be rejected!

Not so with AffSphere. According to Anik Singal, he developed AffSphere as the most affiliate friendly directory around. You can put affiliate links directly in your articles. However, do know that it is not recommended as you might not get much article syndication from this.

And get this, you get 8 total income streams just by using AffSphere!
